Welcome to the World of RCP/M What is an RCP/M How to return to the message system What can you do with this system What you cannot do with this system What happens to the good guys What happens to the bad guys How do you get off the system without trouble :Welcome to the World of RCP/M If this is your first visit, you should be saving all of the information that is passing on your screen to either a printer or to a disk file. The methods vary with the software you are using and the hardware you have available. If you did not do this and you are not familiar with RCP/Ms and RBBS systems, be sure you find out how to get a copy of all this good information. One way to do this is to read the HELP file about XMODEM. Then you can download all of the files with a .HLP extension. Once you have saved all of these files to your disc and have departed from this system, you can use WordStar to print them out. :What is an RCP/M RCP/M stands for Remote CP/M system. This means that you can control most of this system from your keyboard. You can read information file by "typing" it. You can run programs (those with a ".COM" extension) just as you do on you computer. You can transfer most of the files and programs from this system back to your computer for later reading or using. You can also transfer files from your disks to this system. Unfortunately, there are limitations on some of these functions. These limitations are necessary because some people find it amusing to "crash" this system, thus stopping further use of it by any other users. More information on these operations and restrictions can be obtained from other menu selections. :How to return to the message system Just enter: METAL at any CP/M prompt. :What can you do with this system You can find out what files are on the system by typing: FILE at the A>. All files on all drives and all users will then be listed. If you are looking for a specific type of file (for example: all .COM files that you can transfer to your discs) then type: FILE *.OBJ at the A>. NOTE: This systems renames all .COM files to .OBJ if you are allowed to download (transfer to your disks) them. The files with the extension .COM are only for use on this system. This is some of the restrictions necessary to prevent the bad guys from having too much fun. More info on that later. To see what is on the particular drive and user level you are currently on, type: DIR at the A>. To see if the sysop is nearby and can 'talk', just type: CHAT at the A>. If the sysop is available, you will be able to 'talk' via your keyboard. This is a great way to get online assistance. However, please do not expect the sysop to always be available. To change user levels, type: USER # at the A>. NOTE: Replace the # with the actual number you wish to go to -- under CP/M, you may select from 0 to 15 but on this system you are restricted to a much smaller range of user levels. Again, this is part of the protections against the bad guys. To disconnect from this system, just type: BYE at any CP/M prompt (like A>). :What you cannot do on this system You cannot use the resident commands such as: ERA SAVE REN Trying to use these command will cause the system to immediately hang up on you. :What happens to the good guys The good guys are FOG members who respect the system and do not deliberately attempt to crash this system. Goofs are accomodated and can seldom cause any problems for the system. The extra good guys are FOG members who remember that sharing is a two way street. They use this system to upload (transfer files and programs from their disks to this system) about as often as they download (transfer files and programs from here to their disks). The good guys will be allowed access to a major part of this system. The extra good guys will be allowed access to additional areas. :What happens to the bad guys The bad guys are those who waste their time finding new ways to spoil the efforts of the majority. Hopefully, we will never find any FOG members in this category. The common name for these people is "TWIT". This systems has been designed to hang up on "TWIT"s. :How do you get off the system without trouble When you are finished and want to hang up, you must set up the system so that the next user can get on. You do this by typing: BYE at the A>. The system will then say good bye.
