To Install Utilities
-----------
To install the DOS UTILITIES, insert the disk labeled "Data Tools for DOS"
into drive A (or drive B) and at the C:> prompt Type: "A:INSTALL" (or
B:INSTALL) and press ENTER. The installation program will prompt you for
other disks as they are needed.

-----------
Diagnostic Utilities
-----------
XTEST.EXE
A program that checks out the basic functionality of your tape
subsystem. We highly recommend you run XTEST when you first set
up your tape system.

FDUMP.EXE
A general purpose tape dump utility for the display of data in
hexadecimal and either ASCII or EBCDIC. FDUMP is a useful tool
for determining the contents of an unknown tape.

-----------
Interchange Utilities and Files
-----------
DEPOT4.EXE
An easy-to-use menuing shell which can be used to collect input
parameters and launch any of the following Overland Data
utilities: DEPOT2, LABEL, FDUMP, FLASHBAK. DEPOT4 also contains
menu items that allow you to configure various options for
controller cards and software.

For customers who are upgrading from an older version of our
software, DEPOT4 completely replaces the following utilities:
SETCARD.EXE, SETTABLE.EXE, CONFIG.EXE, TXISETUP.EXE,
TXISPD.EXE, PCONFIG.EXE, and T480.EXE.

DEPOT2.EXE
Provides a means to transfer data between disk and magnetic tape.
The data can be transferred to or from tape in its binary form or
optionally be converted between the ASCII and EBCDIC character
sets. Provides command line execution of all functions; optional
automatic command file execution of tape functions; delimiter
insertions (Carriage Return / Line Feed) after each record, with
user specified record length and blocking factor. Can concatenate
a whole tape into one disk file. Can use DOS wild cards to specify
disk files to be written to tape.

CMD
A sample command file for use with the DEPOT2 utility. To use,
enter the following command line:

			DEPOT2 /c CMD

LABEL.EXE
A program that is used by DEPOT4.EXE to write IBM or ANSI standard
labeled tapes for export to mainframe systems.

TAPEUTL.EXE
An interchange program that offers complete labeled tape
capabilities.

INSUTIL.EXE
A utility program to use in conjunction with TAPEUTL to modify
TAPEUTL's default option settings.

ODI_CFG.EXE
This is the configuration program that is used by Depot4 to edit
various interface options. It is available under the Depot4
"Options - Interface..." menu item, or may be run as a stand
alone application.

TRANSLAT.EXE
This program allows you to edit the translation tables that
are stored in the ODI.RLB file. It is available under the Depot4
"Options - Translation Tables..." menu item, or may be run as
a stand alone application.

COMPRESS.EXE
A configuration program for users of the STK 4220 cartridge
drive. This program can report the drive's current compression
status as well as turning ICRC on and off.

-----------
Disk Backup/Restore Utilities
-----------
FLASHBAK.EXE
FLASHBAK is an interactive, window-oriented tape backup and
restore utility. With FLASHBAK, you can select files by various
criteria for backup and restore operations on DOS disks.
FLASHBAK is not intended to be used in conjunction with networks.

In addition, FLASHBAK performs various file management operations
such as finding a file or directory, deleting a file, a set of
files, or a directory, and printing a listing of files that it
backed up.

FLASHBAK is easy to use, with a context-sensitive help system to
guide you through any portion of its operation. It has been
optimized to perform tape operations quickly.

-----------
System Files
-----------
ODI.RLB
A resource file used by all Overland Data tape utilities. This
file MUST be accessible to all tape utilities when they are run.
The automatic installation takes care of this by setting an
environment variable called "ODI" to the path under which your
ODI.RLB file was installed. It does this by adding the following
line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory:
	     SET ODI=C:\ODI
(This assumes that the utilities were installed on drive C in the
directory \ODI.)

-----------
A Note Concerning Micro Channel Installations
-----------

The installation and setup of a Micro Channel card requires an
.ADF file. The file is needed in response to the Adapter
Configuration Error 165. The files can be found on the 3.5"
diskettes.

@7E76.ADF
Used for automatic configuration (Programmable Option Select) of
the XL/2 tape controller board on the Micro Channel bus.

@6127.ADF and @60E9.ADF
Used for automatic configuration (Programmable Option Select) of
the TMC-MCA controller board on the Micro Channel bus.

-----------
Features That Didn't Make It Into The Manual
-----------

ODI_CFG.EXE
You may also use odi_cfg from the command line. Example:

	C:\SOURCE\D4>odi_cfg /
There is no driver in .\ODI.RLB with an ID of "/".

	Acceptable Driver ID's are:
	     Driver: Id:
	    TX8_XL/2 3 << Currently Selected
	    PARALLEL 5
		 TXi 10
		ASPI 15
		 TMC 20

	C:\SOURCE\D4>

At this point, you may select a different interface by
entering the new interface ID. Example:

	C:\SOURCE\D4>odi_cfg 15
The file .\ODI.RLB was successful modified to use
	the ASPI driver.

DEPOT4.EXE - Label
The "Utilities-Write Labeled Tape..." window now allows
you to save a command file and use it latter with label.
Follow the procedures outlined in the manual for using
the Write Labeled Tape window, and then choose the
"Save As..." button. The default name for the command
file is Label.cmd, but you can change it to anything.
Once the file is saved, exit to DOS and then run the
command file by entering the name of the file as the
only parameter to the label program. Example:

	label label.cmd<cr>

Label will then write the tape as specified in the Write
Labeled Tape window.

TAPEUTL
Most long-running routines may be aborted by holding both shift
keys down at the same time. In some cases this causes a
read/write error message to be displayed when the routine is
aborted. In other cases the routine may terminate normally or a
"Function terminated by operator..." message may be given. In ANY
case, if files are being built on tape or disk they should be
considered to be invalid after aborting the routine.

Multi-volume labeled input and output files are supported.

-----------
Known Bugs
-----------

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>> Running Depot4, ODI_CFG, or TRANSLAT in a DOS Window
   under Windows hangs my machine.

We have seen this problem only when running 386Max as
your memory manager and then only with certain display
drivers.

Work Around:
If you are running 386Max, you can do one of:

> Maximize the DOS window to full screen before
  starting Depot4, ODI_CFG, or TRANSLAT.

> Use one of the standard display drivers that
  comes with Windows.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>> Running the Parallel port interface with 386Max or
in a DOS window under Windows hangs my machine.

Windows:
We have been unable to determine why the Parallel
port driver doesn't work under Windows, and we
have no known work-around at this point in time.

386Max:
If you are running 386Max, try using EMM386 and
HIMEM (from Microsoft), or QEMM386 from
Quarterdeck. This appears to be a bug in 386Max,
since QEMM and EMM386 don't exhibit the problem.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>> Using TDISK.SYS does not work with disk cache
   programs.

Work Around:
Make sure that you install LDIMG before the disk cache.
Make sure that you disable caching on the tape disk.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>> Using TDISK.SYS does not work with SHARE

Work Around:
Make sure that you install LDIMG before SHARE.
