Welcome to the New England District Computer System. New Users of the system often get confused be- cause they aren't sure when they are supposed to respond to questions asked by the computer, or how to respond. Normally you will be prompted by a question mark when the computer expects a response. Type your answer and then press the return key. Often all the computer wants is you to type YES or NO. Usually when you simply push the return key it indicates YES to the computer. Sometimes you can initiate a command to the computer instead of merely responding to it. To do this however you should be certain that you are not currently running a program. If the computer is not running a program it should have printed the comment: "Ready" at your terminal, otherwise it is in the midst of some kind of program. You can halt a running program by pressing the control key and the C key SIMULTANEOUSLY!! ---But this is dangerous. It "crashes" the program and means you have to start over. Before going any further you should learn to use the HELP pro- gram. Type: HELP and read carefully what is there. Then I recommend you find out about SIMPLE COMMANDS.
