Any variable may be broken into codes or ranges of values. Examples are 1,2,3 for codes, and 5,10,15 for "cut-points". The cutpoint 5 includes all values below and including 5. The cutpoint 10 includes all values above 5 up to and including 10. The cutpoint l5 includes all values above l0 up to and including 15. An implicit range exists for values above l5 (if any). Usually, independent variables (grouping variables) are the ones for which we want to specify codes or cutpoints. However, all variables may be grouped into codes or value ranges. You will be asked to supply names for your codes or ranges. Such names are optional. Names for codes can be anything to describe the group named by each code. Names for ranges usually describe the range itself. For example, if cutpoints are 5,10,15 then the names could be: 5 OR LES 6 TO 10 11 TO 15 OVER 15 There is one more name for the ranges than there are cutpoints to accommodate any values above the highest named cutpoint.
